No hope for life saving at home

People in Canada now die waiting for help.

They call it "zero" hour, or something like that. Basically our population far outweighs the availability for emergency health services in this country. Canada is no longer a country that can be looked up to for its' wonderful health care system; it just does not exist anymore.

What's the solution? You tell me.

Our governments and top health care officials knew years ago nursing shortages were looming, that our population base was rapidly aging, and that these issues needed to be addressed. What did they do about it? Studies; study after study, after study. That money should have gone to better use.

I practiced as a Registered Nurse for 24 years and the Canadian health care system promised "health promotion" but all I saw was more and more screenings for disease. Screening is not a form of health promotion, not in my dictionary. Health promotion should have resulted in less need for nursing and medical care, more awareness of how to care for ourselves. If it had been done right all those many years ago would we still be addressing this shortage of care? Maybe, but probably not.

We are screwed in the short term. For those of us who are still able it is time to spend a lot more time learning how to slow down, practice mindfulness and meditation, laugh more, love better, and insist that our governments spend our tax dollars properly

Mumps Outbreaks in Manitoba Canada

Vaccine preventable diseases keep showing up; why? If you are a nurse working in Public and Community Health you know part of the answer to this dilemma. If you are honest with yourself you know that the "cold chain" is too often broken.
I have worked delivering immunizations to children and adults and I have seen first hand how nurses working for Health Canada and the VON did not take proper precautions to maintain the cold chain. I doubt nurses are the only guilt parties here though. I all looks good on paper but the reality of transport and storage of vaccines is that the ability to maintain proper care can easily be broken by unfortunate circumstance and deliberate means.
